Appaluska

district 1 spans across idaho, wyoming, montana, utah, and nevada. knowing this i wanted to have one of the state's animals to represent this district. i chose the appaloosa horse, the state horse of idaho. these horses have a distinct coloration, with their front half usually a solid color that slowly speckles into spots of color against a lighter color. so, i used this to influence the patterning. for the coloration of the main design i used was the colors of precious gems (pinks, purple, and aquamarine) which was also the colors of the district 1 tributes debut costume in the first book. instead of the speckles of colored fur, the appaluska has gems growing along its backside. the shiny variant of appaluska takes on more of the precious metal hues of titanium, copper, and gold.
