chupapup is a loyal companion to the livestock farmers of district ten. despite their size, these pokémon pack a fierce bark and bite, though only threats to their livestock family are victim to it. many farmers of the tenth district take in chupapups as protection for their farms, and for herding their livestock. chupapup uses its large ears to send out their psychic messaging to the animals under their charge, guiding them towards chupapup and back home. though trainers and farmers should be careful of a dangerous transition that plagues chupapups. some reports speak of a chupapup with an enlarged head, thin bone-riddled body, large fangs, and goat-like eyes. these infected chupapups are said to be completely uncontrollable, even for skilled trainers, and often lash out at will. some have even been seen attacking livestock they once protected.
mange form
pronunciation: chew-pah-pup
the herding pokémon
as soon as i heard that district 10's industry was livestock and that it located in modern-day texas and mexico, i knew the design i wanted. the chupacabra. to do this, i wanted to create a dual-form pokémon similar to morpeko. to accomplish this, i utilized the popular dog breed of mexico, the chihuahua as a base for the design. to tie in the psychic typing and give it pokémon-like proportions, i enlarged the ears and gave it subtle spiral-like patterning. i also wanted to give the design some character, adding a determined look via the eyebrows. for the shiny variant of chupapup i wanted to give it a darker coloration and bring more orange-y browns for the fluffier fur.
this is the chupacabra form. the chupacabra is a cryptid that was first reported in puerto rico but sightings have spread to mexico and the southern us like texas. the chupacabra is reported to look like a beast so frail that the bones of the ribs and spine can be seen. they are also known for their sharp teeth, where they get the name chupacabra "goat-sucker." however, many scientists believe these sightings are only dogs and coyotes infected with mange. so i wanted to take a similar approach with my chupapup. it shares the same thin-ness as the source material, even sharing a purple-esque hue that some report the chupacabra having. the large snarl proves it is a threat. despite its change, it still has the psychic powers from its ears. then as an added nod to the "goat-sucker" i gave it rectangular pupils that goats have.
