while the sight of fire in a coal mine is not often a welcomed one, the sight of this pokémon often makes miners' entire day. thats because the flame emitted from the body of rascoal can only react with its own body or the flame of other rascoals. this also makes miners days because rascoals make their dens in large deposits of nearby coal. this has led them to be a hero of sorts to the hard-working people of pankasu's twelfth district, as they happily show miners where to dig in exchange for a few shiny objects or a snack or two. trainers should be wary, however, these pokémon can not so easily be trusted as during the slower mining season they become quite mischievous and often resort to quick tricks and pranks on oblivious trainers. they have even been known to trade out goods from a trainer's pack with rocks.
district twelve spans across north carolina, virginia, kentucky, west virginia, tennessee, and some of ohio. for this pokémon i used the state animal of tennessee: the raccoon as inspiration. i mainly wanted to use the patterning of a raccoon to create a really cool affect with the flame. the design came along fairly easily especially once i figured out that i wanted the main flame on its body to be the extra fluff that some raccoons have around their face. then, i knew the tail made the perfect extra touch of flame. then, i took inspiration from marvel's vision and wanted to have a peice of coal centered on its forehead as if thats where it got its powers.
