this small little bug is quite the powerhouse for grain production in pankasu. to keen eye observers, weekern can be spotted amongst the tall stalks of corn and the flowing wheat. some are even perched on harvesters shoulders, guiding them to the ripe harvest. twice every year, weekern shed the outer shell of their body and the shell around their legs to help lay seeds for the next round of crops. farmers should be careful, however, if berries are not left out for the weekern out in the field, they may be apt to snack on the crops, leaving small holes along the leaves.
district nine spans across nebraska, north and south dakota, minnesota, and parts of iowa. the industry for this district is only grains, so naturally the pokemon had to be somehow tied into grains and/or grain production. the weevil is a popular pest that can be a thorn in grain-farmer's side, so i thought taking inspiration from this type of beetle was perfect. then, i wanted to shape the main body after an ear of corn, using the back wings as the husk. then i wanted the small antennas to be small things of wheat, and the legs to be segmented oats. for the shiny weekern, i took inspiration from the colored variation of corn that takes the colors of reds and oranges, with more tan-yellowish husks.
