as the first introduction to model making, i got to design and fabricate a helmet of my own design. for the design, i wanted to combine the style of an old greco-roman helmet and my love of the symbolisms of flowers.
the helmet is made completely out of various types of foam. the actual helmet form is made from eva foam which has been cut, molded with heat, and sanded to create a smooth surface. the edge banding on the front face of the helmet is simple craft foam i cut and glued to add an extra layer of detail and to help make the edge look more cohesive. like the edge banding, the flowers are completely made from craft foam that were then glued into place. after a layer of primer, i used different metallic colored spray paints to give it that old metal sheen.
i took inspiration from ancient ruins and how nature has taken back these monolithic sites and cultures. i find it especially fascinating how such beauty can sprout from once violent locations. the flowers i chose to use in my helmet have some sort of meaning that tied it back to the theme:
the anemone symbolizes the transience of life itself.
the camellia symbolizes several things such as friendship, harmony, and grace. however in this context i chose to focus on the samurai meaning of the camellia which symbolizes death and the fleeting nature of life.
chamomile is known for its protective qualities.
ivy has a protective force, often being resistant to fire.
the calla lily is a symbol of resurrection.
the poppy is a popular symbol used for the remembrance of veterans and those fallen in battle
the thistle represents man's fall from grace.
the violet is a symbol of truth and it represents death due to the greek goddess, persephone.
